Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) fue el creador de la literatura fantástica de horror, que habría de influir sobre toda la literatura europea, y especialmente sobre los "poetas malditos": Baudelaire, Rimbaud, Mallarmé y Verlaine. He wrote sixty-eight short stories, among which The Black Cat (included in this volume), The Cask of Amontillado, Ligeia, The Murders in the Rue Morgue and The Purloined Letter outstand on their own known by the name of Extraordinary Tales.
