The escape from the city of a man driven away bythe hipocresy and the farse of bourgeois society becomes an epic of brave but doubly defeated men: once bythe harshness of the natural world and twice by the perverse morality of the slavedrivrs of the Amazonic rubber plantations. At the same time intrepid and unwary are these men. Spurred by futile drams, they follow a path of mirages, the trailmarks of Death lying in the bush. They ignore the terrible, centripetal force that drags them in; they ignore that they are tracking a dark and terrifyling animal that lies hidden in the juggle.
